Direct Drive Pumps

These pumps are driven directly from the engine usually through a pulley and auxiliary belt or a gear drive.  They provide the hydraulic power to the steering rack to make steering lighter. A clever combined pressure relief valve/flow control valve ensures that under straight ahead driving the pressure in the system is only around 45psi (3 bar), however when the steering is turned and assistance required the hydraulic pressure increases to a maximum between 1,000psi – 1,850psi (about 70 bar – 130bar).
