The EPS Column provides steering assistance with an electro-mechanical power unit mounted between the steering wheel and the steering rack.  They have become popular because they allegedly reduce carbon emissions, can be designed to be compact and can be adjusted to meet specific driving requirements.

The most common fault with all these units is that the steering angle sensor fails.
